Dave Butler
What’s your name?
Dave Butler
How do you spend your days? (family, work, hobbies)
I'm married to Juliette, and we have two children, Emma Lou (3) and Jack (10 months). I teach AP US History at Hanover High School. I'm the Head Coach for the varsity girls basketball team, and I also coach football and track & field there as well. In terms of hobbies, coaching, teaching, and parenting takes up a lot of my time, but I do like to play disc golf if I have a free weekend morning.
What part of town do you live in?
Between Lakeside and VCC.
How long have you been going to City Church?
About three years.
How are you attending City Church these days?
Virtually, at best.
What did you expect from 2020 when it started?
Another fast paced year full of business. Juliette was six months pregnant with our second child, so I knew that it was going to be a challenging spring.
If you could describe 2020 in three words, what words would you choose?
Deep-rooted, needed, challenging
What did the events of 2020 reveal to you about yourself and about Jesus?
That I'm way more selfish than I imagined, and that Jesus is truly the only place to find hope and joy that are worthwhile.
How have the events of 2020 pushed you to reimagine your story? How have they pushed you to reimagine your faith?
I can stand by and watch as world events happen, or I can dive into them and let Jesus use me to change people's hearts by listening to people and loving them well where they are at.
What is your biggest hope for 2021?
That we continue to listen to people, even those who are resentful, and that we use the opportunities Jesus gives us to share his peace, hope, joy, and love.
